Knicks pull off a historic comeback, while the World Cup kicks off in Mexico

Hey Team πŸ‘‹

The Knicks are no strangers to major comebacks. They proved that much in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals when they notched an overtime win versus the Cavaliers after clawing back from a 22-point deficit. While nobody expects a comeback of that magnitude in the Finals, the Knicks aren’t exactly known for conformity. New York pulled off a massive, record-setting 29-point comeback versus the Spurs to take a commanding 3-1 lead.

After the historic comeback, the Knicks are one win away from a championship, but they're not the only team with big games ahead. As the NBA Finals continue, the World Cup is right around the corner, bringing a fresh slate of contenders, rivalries and group-stage matchups.

From tipoff to halftime, San Antonio seemed poised for a runaway victory to even the series. At half, the Spurs led 76-49, marking the largest halftime lead by a road team in the NBA Finals (excluding the 2020 bubble).

But a second half flagrant foul on Victor Wembanyama shifted the momentum completely. The Knicks chipped away at a 29-point deficit until it seemed they couldn’t manage a scoreless possession. With just over a minute left in the game, the Knicks took their first lead of the game.

OG Anunoby completed the miraculous comeback for the Knicks, recording the largest comeback in NBA Finals history. Anunoby and Jalen Brunson combined for a whopping 69 points, with 33 and 36, respectively.

The Group Stage Primer⚽

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is finally here, and it’s shaping up to be a historic spectacle. With the tournament expanding to 48 teams, we’re looking at 104 matches of pure intensity, marking the largest and most expansive edition ever held. For any sports fan, this is more than just a tournament. It’s a global gauntlet where the depth of a squad will be just as critical as the talent on the pitch.

A Refresher on the New Format

The biggest change this year is the transition from the old 32-team structure to a new 48-team format. Here’s the breakdown of how the path to the trophy has evolved:

  • The Group Stage: We now have 12 groups (A–L), each containing four teams. Every nation plays three round-robin matches, maintaining the classic World Cup rhythm fans love.

  • Advancing to the Knockouts: The top two teams from each of the 12 groups automatically advance to the knockout stage (24 teams total).

  • The "Best Third" Rule: To round out the bracket, the eight best third-placed teams across all groups also qualify, bringing the total number of knockout participants to 32.

  • The Round of 32: This is the new "gateway" round. Once the group stage concludes, 32 teams enter a single-elimination bracket. From here on out, it’s win-or-go-home all the way to the final.

Because two-thirds of the field advances, the group stage becomes a high-stakes challenge where every goal matters. A team may not need to win their group to survive, but they will need to keep a close eye on the "third-place table," a tournament within the tournament that will keep us all guessing until the final whistle of the group stage.
