Scheffler Reigns, WNBA Players Rise
Scheffler Secures Another Major at Royal Portrush, and WNBA All-Stars are All Business
It was a weekend of both dominance and disruption. Scottie Scheffler – to nobody’s surprise – continued his near-perfect season with another major win, while Bryson DeChambeau staged one of the most memorable comebacks in Open history. Meanwhile, WNBA All-Stars capitalized on the weekend’s opportunity to demand fair compensation and take action in collective bargaining agreements. Plus, the second half of the MLB season is officially underway.

Who Else?! Scheffler Does it Again

Scottie Scheffler Captures the Third Leg of His Career Grand Slam With Sunday’s Win at The Open
I wasn’t surprised, but I was definitely impressed. Scottie Scheffler continued to cement his legacy last weekend as he lifted the Claret Jug. Now that Scheffler has won the Open, he holds titles for two of the four majors this season, with his first being at the PGA Championship. The runaway win put him in an even better position for the FedEx Cup, putting him 1,300 points ahead of Rory McIlroy and making him the undisputed No. 1 seed heading into the PGA postseason. The win also secured the third leg of his career Grand Slam, leaving only one more major left to conquer: The U.S. Open.
Although Scheffler recently said major wins and fame aren’t fulfilling to him, he continues to cruise to victory. His accuracy leaves no room for final-round dramatics. By the time he took the solo lead on Friday, I knew there was no way he’d relinquish it. On Saturday and Sunday, he was able to play safe golf and slowly build on his lead.
While Scheffler’s dominance was expected, the rest of the field kept things interesting in the battle for the top 10. Harris English, Chris Gotterup and H.T. Li played consistent golf all weekend and shuffled spots on the leaderboard. Gotterup’s performance was particularly intriguing after his win at the Scottish Open the week before, boosting his FedEx Cup prospects.
The weekend’s real drama came from Bryson DeChambeau. On Thursday, he looked like he’d miss the cut after carding a 7-over 78. But with a Ryder Cup spot on the line, he rallied, shooting under par in his next three rounds and earning a spot in the top 10. DeChambeau went 16-under in his last three rounds, carding the lowest final 54-hole score in Open history. After his impressive comeback, U.S. Captain Keegan Bradley confirmed DeChambeau will make the U.S. Ryder Cup Team, regardless of whether he secures a top-6 automatic qualifying spot.
The Open Championship Top 10

WNBA Players Used the All-Star Stage to Protest Unfair Compensation as CBA Negotiations Stall
The WNBA All-Stars took advantage of the spotlight on Saturday to present a united front and protest ongoing labor issues and unfair wages. During warmups, the All-Stars took the court dressed in black shirts that read, “Pay Us What You Owe Us.” Fans expressed their support for the players’ statement by chanting “pay them!” during the All-Star MVP ceremony.
Last Thursday, more than 40 WNBA players met with the league to negotiate the collective bargaining agreement. The negotiations were tense, and players felt the meeting was not productive enough to meet the October 31 CBA deadline.
Over the past few years, the WNBA has grown considerably in terms of popularity, attendance and viewership. Now that college stars like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and Napheesa Collier have joined the league, many fans have carried their individual support over to the players’ respective WNBA teams. WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert spoke about the sustained increase on Saturday, noting national viewership is up 23% and attendance is the highest it’s been in decades, with sold-out arenas becoming common.
Last month, the WNBA also announced three new expansion teams in Detroit, Cleveland and Philadelphia. Each city paid a record $250 million expansion fee to join the league, highlighting the demand for professional women’s basketball teams. The league also has a $2.2 billion broadcast deal set to begin next season. On paper, it seems the WNBA should have plenty of capital to pay its players more. Unfortunately, the issue is a bit more complex, as the NBA still owns more than half of the WNBA and provides financial support.
Despite the WNBA’s recent surge, the league still operates at a loss. Though fans and the WNBA Player’s Association have been outspoken in their support for paying players higher wages, there are plenty of other fans and public figures who oppose the idea. Fans took to X over the weekend to express their frustration with the protest, pointing out that the league posted a $40 million loss last year. Skip Bayless also told WNBA players they should be “thanking” Caitlin Clark for being given the platform to voice their opinions.
A lot can happen between now and October 31, but players are frustrated with a lack of action so far in collective bargaining negotiations. Players have stressed that a lockout is a worse-case-scenario option, but a work stoppage is on the table if their demands are not met.
