The PGA Championship Primer ⛳️

Photo: Aaron O’Hara / Wikicommons
The second major of the year has arrived as the golf world descends on Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, for the PGA Championship. This week, the field faces a masterclass in classic architecture at Aronimink Golf Club, a historic venue that hasn't hosted this championship since 1962. Here’s everything you need to know heading into Thursday’s opening round.
The Course: Aronimink Golf Club
Originally designed by Donald Ross and recently restored by Gil Hanse, Aronimink is a 7,394-yard Par 70 that emphasizes strategic, careful positioning over raw power alone.
The Bunkers: The restoration increased the bunker count from 74 to a whopping 180. These "Ross clusters" pinch the fairways and guard the greens, making off-the-tee accuracy a non-negotiable.
The Greens: Known for their "turtleback" shapes, these greens will test the world's best scramblers.
Signature Holes: Keep an eye on Hole 13, a 385-yard par 4 that officials plan to play as a drivable "risk-reward" hole during the weekend.
The Storylines
Rory’s Grand Slam Momentum: After his spectacular win at the Masters in April, Rory McIlroy arrives in Pennsylvania looking for the second leg of the 2026 Grand Slam. He’s seeking his third Wanamaker Trophy and seventh major title.
Scheffler’s Title Defense: Scottie Scheffler is the defending champion, having won at Quail Hollow last year. He finished runner-up to Rory at Augusta and enters the weekend hungry to flip the script.
Spieth’s Career Slam: Jordan Spieth once again enters the week with the chance to become just the sixth man to complete the modern career Grand Slam.
The LIV Contingent: 11 players from the LIV Golf tour are in the field, headlined by Bryson DeChambeau, who seeks to rectify his performance at The Masters.
