Overtime Overload

From a devastating collapse to a double-OT thriller: This is exactly why we watch.

Hey Team πŸ‘‹

If you thought the second round was intense, consider the Conference Finals a formal warning: The real madness is just beginning. We were promised high-stakes basketball, and the league delivered in the most dramatic way possible, with both Game 1s turning into absolute war zones that required extra time to settle. Whether you’re dealing with the heartbreak of a massive lead evaporating or the sheer exhaustion of a double-OT thriller, one thing is clear: Nobody is getting a night off this series.

Cavs Collapse: Seriously, how does that even happen?! The Cavaliers strolled into Madison Square Garden and looked poised to deliver an upset fueled by a huge second-half performance. By the third quarter, Cleveland had a 22-point lead, and Knicks fans were leaving MSG in droves. I was about ready to turn the TV off, but then Jalen Brunson was unleashed.

In a combination of terrible timeout management and poor play design from Kenny Atkinson, Brunson going on a run, and the Cavaliers going cold, the 22-point deficit was erased just as quickly as it had been created. We saw our second Game 1 overtime, and the Knicks turned a dominant performance into a gut-wrenching 115–104 loss.

To blow a 22-point cushion in the Conference Finals is one thing, but to score just three points in overtime? That’s a nightmare scenario that leaves Cleveland with more questions than answers heading into Game 2.

The Spurs-Thunder Marathon: If you wanted drama, Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals delivered β€” and then some. The Spurs and Thunder survived an instant-classic double-OT thriller that exceeded Game 1 hype.

For a series between the two best records in the West, this was the perfect tone-setter. It was the first Western Conference Finals Game 1 to go to overtime since 1971. Victor Wembanyama was a force of nature, willing San Antonio to the finish line in a 122-115 2OT finish. If the rest of this series is even half as electric as that opener, we’re in for a wild ride.
