The Conference Semis Surge While the "May Mirages" dominate MLB standings
Hey Team 👋
While the NBA hardwood is shaking under the weight of massive Game 1 statements, the MLB diamond is delivering a May standings shakeup that has everyone doing a double-take. We’ve got a rookie phenom rewriting the history books in the paint and a pair of "forgotten" baseball franchises rewriting the script on the field.
From NBA playoff intensity that’s already boiling over to early-season MLB surges that feel like a fever dream, this week is all about proving that what happened last year doesn't mean a thing when the lights get bright.

The second round has officially tipped off, and if Game 1 was any indication, the intensit from the first round is here to stay. From historic individual performances to statement wins by the top seeds, the road to the Finals just got a lot steeper.
Wemby Makes History: In a defensive clinic, Victor Wembanyama shattered the NBA playoff record for blocks in a single game, rejecting 12 shots. The rookie’s presence in the paint anchored a statement victory for the Spurs as they extended their playoff win streak.
Thunder Strike Early: Oklahoma City made quick work of the Lakers in a 108–90 rout. Chet Holmgren led the charge with a 24-point, 12-rebound double-double, while the OKC defense stifled LeBron James & Co.
Knicks Dominance: New York continues to be the hottest team in the postseason. They became the first team in NBA history to win three consecutive playoff games by 25+ points after dismantling the 76ers 137–98 in their opener.
Pistons Snap the Streak: Detroit ended a 12-game postseason losing streak against Cleveland that dated all the way back to 2007. Cade Cunningham’s 23 points powered the Pistons to a 111–101 win, proving that the No. 1 seed in the East is finding its rhythm at the perfect time.

May Flowers?💐 Or Early Season Flukes? 🥀

Looking at the standings right now, it’s almost like 2025 never happened. While some of the usual suspects are holding down the fort, others have emerged from the shadows. The Atlanta Braves have undergone a total metamorphosis, shaking off last year's playoff miss to become the first team to 20 wins this season. They currently own the best record in baseball, fueled by a league-leading ERA.
But the real "spit-take" of the season? The Athletics sitting atop the AL West. In a division featuring the Rangers, Astros and Mariners, it's the A's holding the No. 1 spot in early May. We could be witnessing the rise of a new World Series dark horse, or perhaps just a very lucky spring.
As we officially get our feet wet this month, team futures are starting to take shape, but with 120+ games left, there’s plenty of time for the "May Mirage" to fade into a long summer grind.
