The Winter Games ramp up as college basketball delivers a Valentine’s Day showcase.
Hey Team 👋
Now that football is officially in the rearview mirror, the sports calendar enters its annual February lull. The Super Bowl hype has faded; college basketball is heating up, but March Madness is still weeks away; the NBA trade deadline has come and gone while the playoffs remain distant; Spring Training is approaching but not quite here; and Masters commercials tease a tradition unlike any other that’s still months away. Fortunately, this year offers a perfect antidote: the Olympics.

The 2026 Winter Games in Northern Italy are already delivering the drama, spectacle, and national pride that only the Olympics can provide. Ski mountaineering (Skimo) makes its Olympic debut — the first new Winter sport added in decades — and, as always, controversy has followed closely behind, with early debates over scoring and judging sparking tension between nations. In an otherwise quiet stretch on the sports calendar, the Games have arrived at just the right time.
Norway has surged to the top of the medal table with 13 total medals, including a Games-best seven gold (three more than any other nation). The United States sits just behind with 12 total medals, though only four have come in gold. Host nation Italy rounds out the top three, also tallying 13 medals, with four gold to its name.

Men’s College Basketball Rankings

While college basketball rankings have remained relatively stable over the last couple weeks, the top 25 played musical chairs this week and turned the AP poll on its head. Some of the only teams safe from the massive mix-up were Arizona and Miami (Ohio), who remain undefeated and in their respective spots.
Houston surged to No. 3 following a statement win over BYU, while the Cougars slid toward the bottom of the rankings. Gonzaga took one of the biggest hits of the week, dropping six spots after a stunning upset loss to Portland. Meanwhile, St. John’s made one of the loudest climbs, jumping five places after knocking off UConn.
Elsewhere, movement was more subtle but still significant. Iowa State, Nebraska, Kansas, North Carolina, Virginia, Florida and St. Louis each ticked upward, while Illinois, Purdue, Texas Tech and Vanderbilt quietly drifted down the list.
