The Road to Indy: Bumpy, Bold, and Bracket-Busting
Hey Team đź‘‹
It’s all led to this. Every late-game heartbreak, ice-cold buzzer-beater and bracket-shattering upset has funneled the chaos into Indianapolis. The Final Four is set, and the matchups are pure cinema, featuring a heavyweight clash between two No. 1 seeds on one side and a tactical battle between No. 3 Illinois and No. 2 UConn on the other.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. A ticket to the National Championship is on the line. But before we tip off in Indy, let’s look at the wreckage (and the heroics) left in the wake of the Elite Eight.

The Dagger in Durham: UConn Stuns Duke
In arguably the most electric game of the entire tournament, UConn pulled off a heist for the ages. At one point, the Blue Devils were cruising with a 19-point cushion, seemingly punching their own tickets to Indy. But the Huskies refused to let up, even when it seemed all hope was lost.
The ending was pure Mullins Madness. With less than a second on the clock, UConn’s Braylon Mullins drained a three-point dagger to silence the Blue Devils. The comeback was fueled by a late-game nightmare for Duke’s Cayden Boozer: A critical turnover by the star guard put the ball right into Mullins’ capable hands. While Boozer took the loss to heart, the reality is this may have been his final run in a Duke uniform as he eyes the NBA Draft. For UConn, the "improbable" is now their reality.
Midnight Strikes: Illinois Ends the Iowa Fairytale
It was a hell of a ride while it lasted. From knocking off No. 1 Florida in the Round of 32 to toppling Nebraska in the Sweet 16, No. 9 Iowa was the darling of the dance. For 33 minutes, it looked like the slipper might still fit; the score was knotted at 51-51 with just over seven minutes to play.
Then, the Fighting Illini decided they’d seen enough. Illinois flipped a switch, closing the game on a devastating 20-8 run. The Hawkeyes’ Cinderella campaign hit a wall of Orange and Blue, as the Illini punched their first Final Four ticket in nearly two decades.
May-Day in Indy: Michigan Dominates Tennessee
The No. 6 Volunteers also had a fun run, and while they may have knocked off America’s underdog (Miami of Ohio) and busted plenty of brackets with wins over Virginia and Iowa State, everyone likes an underdog. Despite their early-tournament theatrics, the Vols ran into a freight train against No. 1 Michigan.
What started as a gritty, low-scoring deadlock quickly turned into a clinic. Michigan exploded for a 22-point lead before the halftime buzzer even sounded. They didn't just win. They suffocated Tennessee, building on that lead until the final horn signaled a 33-point blowout. The Wolverines aren't just headed to Indy, they’re marching in with a chip on their shoulder.
The Desert Drought: Arizona Takes Care of Purdue
Every March, the same graphic makes the rounds: No team west of Texas has won the National Championship since 1997. The team that did it back then? The Arizona Wildcats.
Fast forward 29 years, and the Cats are back in the Final Four after a commanding 79-64 win over No. 2 Purdue. Arizona’s defense was the story, neutralizing Braden Smith and Trey Kaufman-Renn while holding the Boilermakers to their second-lowest scoring output of the season. Arizona looks like the most complete roster left in the field. Don’t be shocked if history repeats itself and the drought finally ends in the desert.
