And Then There Were 50

Scheffler won the St. Jude by eight. Now 50 players head to Bellerive fighting for 30 spots at East Lake.

Hey Team 👋

The FedEx Cup Playoffs are officially down to 50, and Scottie Scheffler just reminded everyone why he’s the one to beat. After an eight-shot demolition at the St. Jude Championship, Scheffler heads to St. Louis with a massive FedEx Cup lead and plenty of momentum.

But with only 30 spots available at next week’s TOUR Championship, the BMW Championship is where the playoff pressure really starts to turn up. Here’s everything you need to know before the field takes on Bellerive Country Club.

St. Jude Championship Recap

It’s been a long time coming: Scottie Scheffler is back. In other words, good luck to everyone else.

While Scheffler has had a great season (in regular terms), he hasn’t had a great season by Scottie-Scheffler standards. Top 10 finishes aren’t enough for the World No. 1. So, after six winless months, he opened the FedEx Cup Playoffs by absolutely steamrolling the field at TPC Southwind. Scheffler finished the weekend 17-under, winning by a whopping eight strokes.

The win gives Scheffler a massive head start in the three-event playoff race. And now, instead of simply being the favorite at the BMW Championship, he's coming off a performance that made everyone else look like they're playing for second.

FedEx Cup Playoffs Format & Overview

The FedEx Cup Playoffs are down to 50.

After last weekend's FedEx St. Jude Championship cut the field from 70 players to 50, the remaining contenders head to St. Louis for the BMW Championship. The stakes are simple: 50 players enter, but only 30 will survive.

The top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings after Sunday's final round will advance to the season-ending TOUR Championship at East Lake, where the FedEx Cup champion will ultimately be crowned.

The BMW Championship is a no-cut event, meaning all 50 players will play four rounds. And with 20 players set to see their seasons end in St. Louis, every position on the leaderboard matters.

Leading the way, naturally, is Scottie Scheffler. Scheffler enters Bellerive with 4,873 FedEx Cup points, nearly 1,450 more than second-place Matt Fitzpatrick, after putting together one of the most dominant performances of the season in Memphis.

Bellerive Country Club

The BMW Championship heads to Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri, for the first time since the course hosted the 2018 PGA Championship.

Bellerive will play as a 7,448-yard, par-70 this week. It’s long, demanding and designed to put a premium on quality ball-striking. The course features water hazards and strategically placed bunkers, which introduce elements of trouble. Its large, undulating greens can give players plenty of putting surface, but finding the right landing area will be critical.

The biggest challenge could be balancing aggressive plays with accuracy. Bellerive gives the game's biggest hitters opportunities to take advantage of its length, but missed fairways and poorly positioned approach shots can quickly turn birdie opportunities into blowups.

TLDR: Bomb it, but don't get stupid.

And with only 30 spots at East Lake, avoiding disaster could be just as important as piling up birdies.
